There is a Japanese proverb that says, “It’s dark under the lighthouse.” I attribute my delay in writing about The Green Corner Store to how often I go there, for meetings, workshops, and shopping. Some times the most difficult thing to see is what’s under your nose.
Shelley Green, owner of The Green Corner Store, has dreamed about opening an eco-lifestyle store in Arkansas. Her dream became a reality in July 2009 when she opened her store in downtown Little Rock.
The Green Corner Store offers everything from cloth diapers to organic dog food to bulk tea to jewelries made with recycled materials. To say that the store is committed to sourcing locally is an understatement. The Green Corner Store currently sources products from 80 vendors out of which only 6 are located out of state.
Shelley’s background played a pivotal role in how The Green Corner Store came about. With background in marketing, fashion, and retail, Shelley’s search for less toxic products began when she found herself having health issues in her thirties. Dehydration, fatigue, and flu plagued her until she met a holistic health practitioner who healed her back to health. She felt like sixteen again! Since then, Shelley has been sharing with others natural and holistic ways to live.
After working for a major department store, Shelley helped open an eco-friendly general store in Birmingham, Alabama. Several years after she moved to Little Rock, Shelley continued the trend by opening The Green Corner Store.
The Green Corner Store offers natural and healthier alternatives to everything you use in a day. Wanna make the switch to non-toxic household cleaning supplies? The Green Corner Store got you covered. Cold weather making your skin dry? Check out Maison Terre’s body care products. Interested in all-natural vegan mineral cosmetics? Try Etniq Mineral Cosmetics made by Leah Patterson, a local holistic esthetician.
According to Shelley, future plans for The Green Corner Store include kitchen and garden departments, as well as more items for children and men.
With Shelley’s commitment to the environment and holistic health, it’s no wonder that The Green Corner Store recently won a Seal of Approval from Green America, a national organization that promotes ethical consumerism. Green America’s Seal of Approval is NOT an easy feat to accomplish. Businesses interested in the organization’s Seal of Approval must undergo a rigorous screening process. Green America gives its Seal of Approval to only businesses that operate in ways that support workers, enhances communities, and protect the environment. Once approved, businesses will be listed as socially and environmentally-responsible businesses in Green America’s National Green Pages directory.
So far, The Green Corner Store is the only retail business in Arkansas with Green America’s Seal of Approval. Congratulations, Shelley!
