Reduce, Reuse & Refill

So, I carry reusable grocery bags and water bottles. I recycle, eat locally-grown produce, and walk and bike to places. I weatherized the house, replaced lawns with vegetable gardens, and xeriscaped where I can’t grow food.

It was only natural that I replaced my cats’ litter with those made with eco-friendly materials like pine, wheat, and old newspaper. Guess what… my cats don’t care about the environment. I think they secretly hate the environment. Even though I tried to ease them into eco-friendly litter very, very slowly, they protested as soon as they detected the presence of greener materials.

When we humans protest, we hold signs and maybe play drums. When cats protest, they urinate. When my cats started to urinate on my bed, that’s when I said, “Screw with eco-friendly kitty litter!” Between green and cats urinating on bed, the choice is clear. You do whatever you can to stop cats from urinating on your bed.

So, my cats have been peeing happily on not-so-green, non-biodegradable clumping clay litter. Oh, well. We can’t all be perfect, right?

We did, however, discover a greener way to purchase not-so-green clumping clay litter. Buy them at Petco!

Why Petco? Because Petco has a refillable kitty litter station that allows you to reuse your buckets. When you buy their litter for the first time, you must buy their buckets. Starting next time, though, you can bring your buckets back to the store and refill for $9.99 for 35 pounds. No need to recycle your kitty litter buckets. Just take them back in and refill.

So if your cats are like mine, and they refuse to switch to eco-friendly litter options, give Petco’s refillable litter station a try.
